Biographical notes
Trained in Berlin under his father, goldsmith to the Prussian court, Charles-Louis Wagner settled in Paris in the 1820s. In partnership with the lapidary Mention, and awarded gold medals in 1832 and 1837, he revived early techniques such as niello and was among the pioneers of historicism. Frédéric-Jules Rudolphi would carry on this neo-Gothic vein.
Born in Copenhagen in 1808, Frédéric-Jules Rudolphi settled in Paris around 1835 and became workshop head to the goldsmith Charles-Louis Wagner, whose business he took over in 1842. A master of the historicist Gothic Revival and Renaissance styles, he won medals in London in 1851 and in Paris in 1855 and 1867. His works are held by the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
