Biographical notes
A painter, engraver and stage designer for Charles Dullin and Jean-Louis Barrault, Lucien Coutaud (1904-1977) discovered tapestry in 1933 through Marie Cuttoli. Most of his tapestries were woven by the Pinton workshops for the Compagnie des Arts Français. Figurative and dreamlike, with sharp forms, they bear the imprint of Surrealism. His design “Jardins exotiques” (1960) adorned the first-class lounge of the liner France.
